Manchester United have opened talks to sign Cerro Porteño left-back Diego Leon. The 17-year-old has broken into Cerro Porteño’s first-team in the Paraguayan league, making 21 appearances and scoring twice.

He caught the attention of Arsenal and Man City scouts earlier this year and now United are making headway in their pursuit of him.

Leon is fast, tall, athletic and has good ball control technique.

Left-back has been a constant problem for United. With Luke Shaw out injured and Tyrell Malacia struggling for fitness. Although the club do have Harry Amass, a youngster bought from Watford’s academy.

Leon is seen as a talent player for the future and talks are underway over a fee in the region of £3million. With Jason Wilcox leading the talks.

Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui have all had to cover the position in Shaw’s absence. With Tyrell Malacia now the only natural left back in the squad.

Whether United intend to throw Leon straight into the first team squad. Or whether he will spend time in the academy, or out on loan, remains to be seen.
